The Season 19 finale of Grey’s Anatomy ended on a major cliffhanger, with Teddy Altman’s fate left dangling in the balance. What happened to Teddy Altman and is her portrayer, Kim Raver, leaving Grey’s Anatomy? Keep reading to find out.
Grey’s Anatomy is ABC’s medical drama following the personal and professional lives of interns, residents and attending surgeons at the fictional Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in Seattle, Washington. Created by Shonda Rhimes, the show debuted in 2005 and spawned the spin-off Station 19. It has received over 38 Primetime Emmy nominations and is currently on its 20th season.
Teddy Altman (played by Kim Raver) was first introduced during Season 6. She is an attending cardiothoracic surgeon who served in the army alongside Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd). Raver recurred on the show for three seasons before exiting in Season 8. She returned six years later in 2017 and has remained on the show ever since. She and Owen eventually took their friendship to the next level and got married. They are now raising their two children together.
At the end of two-hour Season 19 finale, Teddy collapsed as she was about to perform emergency surgery on a patient. The doctor had been complaining about a toothache the entire episode, but her health condition was clearly much worse than a cavity. The interns in the operating room could not find her pulse and the scene ended with her husband rushing to her side, attempting to revive her using a defibrillator.
The cliffhanger ending had fans scratching their heads about what could have caused her heart to stop and what this means for Teddy’s future. Was she killed off? Read on to see what happened to Teddy Altman.
What happened to Teddy Altman on Grey’s Anatomy? In the Season 20 premiere, viewers learned that Teddy’s toothache had been so severe that it effected her heart. Thankfully, new Head of Cardio Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill) was able to perform an emergency heart valve replacement, a very risky surgery that Owen okayed. “Dr. Altman is in critical condition, we don’t have a lot of time,” Winston told Owen. As the trauma surgeon looked on to his intubated, unconscious wife, he told Winston firmly: “Do the procedure.”
After the procedure, Winston noticed that she had no pulse in her leg and he rushed her back into surgery to remove a blood clot and save her from amputation. Meanwhile, Owen was beating himself for giving Teddy a smoothie instead of having her toothache checked out.
Teddy eventually pulled through and her leg was able to be saved. She woke up and asked “What happened?” as Owen kissed her forehead. Although she survived the ordeal, showrunner Meg Marinis has hinted that near-death experience is “absolutely” going to change her. “That’s part of the reason to tell the story, right?” Marinis told TVLine ahead of the Season 20 premiere. “To see what it brings out in the character.”
“We’ve seen Owen have a life-and-death situation, but we haven’t seen Teddy recently have one,” she continued. “So like it would with anyone, it has an impact on her relationship with Owen, as well as with patients and how she treats other surgeons. It’s not going to be one of those things where she recovers and forgets.”
Grey’s Anatomy airs on ABC on Thursdays at 9/8c and streams on Hulu.
